DeSci Tokens and the Blockchain Funding of Longevity Research
Decentralized science (DeSci) communities pool crypto to fund early research. Here is how it works, and the risks to understand.

DeSci, short for decentralized science, uses blockchain tools to fund, govern and share research. It emerged partly out of frustration with slow grant cycles and paywalled results.
How a research DAO works
- A community forms a DAO (decentralized autonomous organization) and pools funds, often by selling governance tokens.
- Scientists pitch projects. Token holders vote on which to fund.
- In some models, resulting intellectual property is held in on-chain structures (such as IP-NFTs), so the DAO can share in future licensing.
Names to research
- VitaDAO: community funding for longevity research.
- BIO Protocol: a network that launches and supports field-specific BioDAOs.
- Molecule: infrastructure for tokenized research IP.
The risks
Tokens are volatile and speculative, regulation is evolving, and early-stage science mostly fails, which is normal. Treat DeSci as a fascinating experiment in research funding, not a get-rich-quick scheme.
