7 Free Tools for Aspiring Bioprinting Researchers
You don’t need a lab to start learning. These free tools cover anatomy, design, slicing and image analysis.

Bioprinting skills are part biology, part CAD, part image processing. These free tools let you practice the digital half today.
- 3D Slicer: open-source medical image platform. Segment anatomy from CT/MRI and export STL files.
- NIH 3D: a library of free, printable biomedical models, from proteins to organs.
- Blender: sculpt organic shapes and clean up meshes.
- FreeCAD / OpenSCAD: precise, parametric scaffold design (think lattices and porosity).
- PrusaSlicer / Cura: slicers to turn models into printer paths; tweak them for paste extrusion.
- Fiji (ImageJ): the standard for analyzing microscopy images, including cell viability counts.
- PubMed + Google Scholar: set alerts for “bioprinting” to follow new papers weekly.
Bonus: subscribe to the Bioprinting Brief and we’ll send you our starter kit.
